The 4 major Versions of Windows 7

Retail Versions of Windows 7 may be purchased in either Full or Upgrade versions.

Full Versions are intended to be installed on a computer that has no qualifying previous version of Windows.
Upgrade versions are intented for computer systems that are to be upgraded from Windows XP, Windows Media Center, Windows XP Tablet or Windows Vista.

Retail versions may be activated on only 1 system, although there is great latitude regarding the number of hardware upgrades the system may experience while still qualifying for later activations.

The version of Windows 7 that most consumers will have will be an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) version that is tied directly to the specific hardware that comprised the computer when it was first manufactured by the system builder. Hardware changes that do not include major upgrades are usually allowed but it is wise to consult the system builder if there are any questions regarding what upgrades are permitted.
Replacement of the motherboard may require a new Windows License.

Windows 7 is available in both 32 bit and 64 bit versions.
The 32 bit version of Windows 7 is still quite common, even though many Computer CPUs and Motherboards are currently 64 bit capable.
As availability of 64 bit hardware drivers continues to rise, 64 bit versions of Windows 7 are becomming for plentiful.

Versions US Consumers are unlikely to see:
1) Windows 7 Home Basic - for Developing Countries
2) Windows 7 Enterprise - sold only to business / enterprise customers via Software Assurance (SA) volume licenses.

Upgrade Paths

(If you are running Windows XP, there are no In-Place installation options.)
(There are no upgrade options at all if you are running Windows 2000 or any Windows 9x)

Overview Of The Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program

June 26, 2009 to January 31, 2010 - Only PCs pre-installed with a qualifying Vista edition starting with June 26, but no later than January 31, 2010, are eligible for a free Windows 7 upgrade through the Upgrade Option Program.

This is a consumer-oriented program targeted at individual consumers and small businesses that have purchased a maximum of 25 eligible PCs during the OEM specified Program Eligibility Period. End users will have to meet these requirements to be deemed eligible for the upgrade to Windows 7 when it is released on or about October 22, 2009.

The Windows 7 Upgrade Program is designed to assist Microsoft's OEM partners in minimizing the number of end users who may postpone acquiring a new computer because of the impending release of the Windows 7 operating system.

1) End users must purchase a new PC that is pre-installed with an eligible Windows Vista Operating System, during the program eligibility window.

2) The PC must have a valid Certificate of Authenticity (COA) attached.

3) The following are the only valid upgrade paths under the program :

A. Windows Vista Home Premium -> Windows 7 Home Premium
B. Windows Vista Business -> Windows 7 Professional
C. Windows Vista Ultimate -> Windows 7 Ultimate

* Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic, Windows Vista Starter Edition, and Windows XP (all editions) are NOT qualifying products under the program.

The Program does not support multiple upgrades for medium, large, or enterprise customers. Large Businesses that want to upgrade multiple PCs should use the appropriate Microsoft Volume Licensing program.

Note that this is an optional program, so not all OEMs may choose to participate, or they may limit the time period when upgrades will be allowed. OEMs that choose to participate in this upgrade program will have the freedom to determine how to best provide qualifying end users with the upgrade.
